Holy Smokes! A How-To Guide.

Not all fires burn the same. A common question asked by those who use cannabis is often, which is the best way to smoke it? And, just like when someone asks ‘what is the meaning of love?’, there are a variety of different answers. My answer would be, it depends on the consumer. What are your needs and what are the things you prioritise? Taste, efficiency, effectiveness, discretion, and portability are all factors that may influence an individual's choice on which method of consumption is best for them. We will do our best to outline the difference between a variety of different smoking methods and devices, and some of the pros and cons associated with them.

Pipes

Nothing says sophistication like an old-fashioned pipe… if it’s the 1920s and we hadn’t discovered that smoking tobacco was bad for you. Nonetheless, a standard pipe (with no water) made of wood, metal, or glass is still popular for cannabis consumption. They are relatively quick and easy to use, small enough to carry, and a lot simpler to clean than a water pipe. The lack of water filtration means that the smoke is harsher and the hit is a lot warmer though, which may be uncomfortable for some people.

One-Hitter

The one-hitter is functionally still a pipe. The only difference is they have a smaller capacity (usually less than 0.3g), and as the name suggests, used to deliver a single hit of cannabis. Ideal for light users, or those wanting to microdose, these can often be as small, portable, and as discreet as a cigarette.

Chillum

There are pipes and then there are other pipes. The chillum has its origins in India in the 18th century. It was historically used with hash, and was also featured in some Rastafarian rituals. In between a pipe and a one-hitter, a chillum is effectively a straight smoking pipe, and just like a pipe, they do not require water, which gives them that stronger hit. Unlike a pipe, a chillum does not have a carb hole, meaning there is no airflow control beyond your inhalation. For a traditional pull, hold it like you would a one-hitter or joint (i.e. insert the chillum between your middle and index fingers, clench your fist, and use the circle of your thumb and index finger as a mouthpiece).

Bongs (Water Pipes)

The trusty bong, or ‘billy’ to some people, is a centuries old tried and true method for the consumption of dry cannabis flower. Bongs are pipes that come in different shapes and sizes, and are filled with water. The water filters the smoke to allow for a cooler and smoother inhalation. While they deliver a less harsh hit than a standard pipe, they can be quite bulky and anything but discreet, so they’re best for at home use as portability is limited.

Gravity Bong

For those not familiar, this may sound like a sci-fi smoking device, but for those in the know you might have called them bucket bongs. Essentially, most gravity bongs are made using 2 containers. The larger container or ‘bucket’ has an open top and is filled with water. The smaller container has a bowl attached (usually to the top) and an open bottom. The smaller container is then placed into the larger one, and once the bowl with the cannabis is lit, you move the smaller container upwards, resulting in a pressure difference. This pressure slowly fills the smaller container with smoke until the bowl is removed and the contents (of the smaller top compartment) are inhaled.

Gravity bongs produce intense concentrated hits making them stronger than other consumption methods, and are best suited to experienced users who require a stronger effect with less cannabis. Since the water is being used to create a pressure difference, not for filtration, the hits can be quite harsh. In addition to the intensity, this makes this method unsuitable for beginners.

Joints

Arguably the most popular method of cannabis consumption, joints are easy to carry and share around. Additionally, they can be put out and re-lit and, unlike the aforementioned pipe-like devices, they tend to offer a less intense and steadier hit. The main downside (apart from the health risks of smoking, which apply to all these methods), is the difficulty in preparing. Rolling a joint or blunt can be quite a tricky exercise for those not practiced in the fine art of rolling.

There’s no “right” way to light up. You’ve just got to find the method that suits your mood, the moment, and your tolerance for coughing fits. With any luck, this guide makes the decision a little easier. Or at least helps you avoid the options that would immediately take you out.
